Stat of the Day: 28th July 2012
A non-runner yesterday, and an Olympic sized head cold for yours truly this morning. I’m sure I’ll come under fire from the ‘absolute price is value’ brigade today, but that’s fine, because I’m nominating a virtually unbeaten horse from a white hot training yard, in the…
Tom Dascombe’s stable is in absolutely dazzling form just now. His figures for the last week are 1807111213247222511. That’s seven winners and six places from nineteen runners. Sheesh!
Today, he runs just one horse at Ascot (and another at Salisbury), where he has a fine record, especially with his three year olds. Just nine horses of that age have run, and three of them won, for a profit of eleven units.
Gaul Wood is favourite in the last at Ascot today, and rightly so. As a three year in with his elders, he gets the healthy weight for age concessions meaning, despite being second top rated, he gets weight from all bar two of his remaining thirteen rivals (three non-runners).

The faster ground and furlong shorter trip shouldn’t be a hindrance for a son of Amadeus Wolf (progeny are generally fast ground sprinters), and the class is spot on (just failed last time in same class as today).
Sometimes it pays to roll with the obvious, particularly when there are so many positives, and even more so when the yard is in extreme form, as Dascombe’s is currently.
Gaul Wood is 3/1 BOG in a field of fourteen, much of which is dead wood, and I’m playing win only.
As ever, make sure you get the right price, so…
