Stat of the Day, 6th August 2012
SotD climbed back off the cold list yesterday, as Derwent scored at Newbury. The SP was a disappointing 15/8 and we made 2pts courtesy of Betfair SP. This price was badly affected by a non-runner reducing the prices by almost 40%, but a win’s a win, I’ll leave you all to decide whether there was any value there or not. Those that jumped on at 5/1 early on will be happiest.
It’s not the easiest day today to keep the SotD ball rolling. Monday racing is largely uninspiring and today is no exception. We have 4 UK meetings: Kempton hosts its first fixture since relaying the track, so who knows how that will run, whilst Carlisle hosts a full card of Pro-Am Lady Rider races. So, I’ll have to swerve those two, I’m afraid. There’s nothing jumping out at me at Ripon, so by default, we’re off to the All-Weather track at Dunstall Park for a Class 5 Amateur Riders Handicap (I know that might seem a little hypocritical) for 3yr olds and over. The going is Standard as expected and we’re due to see twelve runners tackle a mile and a half in the…
6.20 Wolverhampton
Trainer Steve Gollings has a reasonable record here at Wolverhampton: a 25% win strike rate in the last two years, generating over 56% profit on stakes with a place strike rate of 63%. In true SotD style, he has just one runner out today and it runs in our featured race! The horse in question is Rockweiller, who is relatively lightly raced and won a similar amateur riders handicap at the back-end of last season. he should have a good chance now back in this kind of company.
The choice of jockey is an interesting one, too: Simon Walker takes the ride today and he’s one of the better riders available in this race, if not the best and his experience could well prove decisive. Simon has a good record in Wolverhampton handicaps, with a 22% win strike rate (including races against professional riders): his profits from those races show a return of over 55% and his place strike rate is an excellent 56% too.
It’s unfortunate that Rockweiller is a bit too short in the market for my liking to take an E/W bet: I’ve taken the 11/2 BOG on offer from Paddy Power as our advised price today. I strongly fancy him to at least get a place today, so if he drifts any in the market, I may well personally add a place bet to my wager, but the official SotD selection is win only! Should you choose to wait and see if it’s worth going E/W, then I suggest you…
