Stat of the Day, 12th August 2012
After a good run expect a bad run. So the saying goes, and so it is for SotD aficionados just now. But we’re nothing if not persistent, and Sundays have dug us out of plenty of holes in recent months.
There’s now’t of interest on the UK mainland today, so I’m popping across the Irish Sea to Northern Ireland and the…
4.05 Downpatrick
I actually was going to post a different horse in the same race before stumbling on this fella, so there’s at least one beast I’m fearful of in the line up! I’ll come to that in a moment, but first let me introduce the trainer of the horse in question this afternoon.
John McConnell is far from a household name over here, but for Downpatrick regulars, he’s a man who know how to win at their local course.
Since 2007, he’s enjoyed six winners from 39 runners, and a profit of 27 points… and all six of those winners came at today’s trip of 2m2f!
McConnell actually won this race last year with a horse called Charger, and he bids for the repeat this afternoon.
Obviously, the horse goes at the track and in this class of contest, having won a year ago. That victory was off a mark of 101 and today he’s just two pounds higher. Charger’s overall track record includes a win and a place from just three runs here, and he loves fast ground.
He’s quite likely to be ridden prominently, which is an advantage here, and he may lead all the way, as he did a year ago. This is Charger’s third run back from a break, and he was beaten just five lengths last time out.
He should be spot on for this, and 14/1 e/w looks perfectly reasonable (although the safety limit at Downpatrick means there will be a maximum of fifteen runners, and we’re likely to have a full field, so lots to beat and only three places).
The other I want to mention is Noel Meade’s Wall Street Wally. He too is a course and distance winner, as recently as last month, and he has a fair scope for improvement. Whether he’s battle hardened enough to beat a field of handicappers – it was a maiden hurdle the last day – remains to be seen, but he might be worth a saver.
Irrespective of that, the SotD pick is Charger, each way, in the 4.05 Downpatrick, at 14/1 Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG).
