Stat of the Day, 14th August 2012

Another non-runner yesterday, this time held up by the nasty accident on the M6 involving amongst other vehicles, a horse box, and a dead horse. Very sad.

Today, we’re away to a beautiful town in the West Country for the …

We’ve got a trainer in dazzling form today, and a horse with an enviable distance record. The trainer is Robert Cowell, whose sprinters in August this year have won three (including a Listed race in France), and placed twice more, from just seven runners.

Those placed horses were a runner up (Spirit Quartz) in a Group 2, and a 20/1 third (Lui Rei) in the 27-strong Stewards’ Cup!

Oh, and Mr Cowell does all right with his Bath runners too, rare though they are. In fact, he’s run just five at this track in the last five years, and three have won.

Like today’s SotD pick, all three were three-year-olds, and they’ve accumulated 23 units of profit between them.

So allow me to introduce you to Cats Eyes. This lass has actually won three of her five starts at today’s five furlong trip, including one over course and distance.

Since her last win three runs back, she was beaten less than five lengths on suitably soft ground (all wins on decent ground or fast all weather), and then may have been drawn on the wrong side – or perhaps not good enough – in a typically competitive York handicap. That latter race was over half a furlong more which may not have suited, as she seems an out and out speedball.

Her last win was off 68 and today she races from four pounds higher in the handicap, but more materially in a higher class. Despite that, she has a lot in her favour: trip, track, going, jockey (Shane Kelly has won twice on her), trainer form… and possibly draw too.

Cats Eyes has the one stall here and, in a race with a fair bit of pace, she ought to be able to track and finish. Granted normal luck in running, she has a fine chance of a place at least, and 14/1 looks too big.

That price is available with bet365, and they’ll pay you starting price if that is bigger. Each way today, at the aforementioned 14/1 with the aforementioned bookie.
