York Trainer Stats
Andy Newton gives you his quick-fire trainers to note and a few you might want to avoid at this week’s York Ebor meeting…..
Trainers To Note……
WILLIAM HAGGAS (Recent York Stats – 12 winners from his last 56 runners, 21%) – Often does well at this track – Pay close attention to any 2 year-olds they run on the Knavesmire over the next 4 days as they are 2 from 8, but more so their 3 year-olds – they are 6 from 21 (29%) with that age group.
MAHMOOD AL ZAROONI (Recent York Stats – 7 winners from his last 33 runners, 21%) – The newer of the Godolphin trainers has made a bit of a name for himself at York in recent years and all their runners should be noted. However, play special attention to their 3 year-olds as they currently boast a very impressive 4 from 12 (33%) record in that age bracket.
JOHN DUNLOP (Recent York Stats – 10 winners from his last 36 runners, 28%) – With just 6 winners so far this season then things are looking extremely dire at this once powerful yard. However, with impressive figures at York in recent years they will be hoping they can gain some compensation at a track they’ve often done well at. In fact they’ve done well across the board with all age groups (2YO – 33%, 3YO – 29%, 4+YO – 26%) and with it could be that because of their current poor form we might also see a few of theirs go off at nice prices – they also had a winner at Yarmouth on Tuesday.
SIR HENRY CECIL (Recent York Stats – 10 winners from his last 50 runners, 20%) – Okay, the Cecil/York strike-rate is borderline, but if we take out their juvenile and 3 year-old runners then it’s actually 7 from 26 (27%) – With that in mind it’s probably best to concentrate on their 4+year-olds over the next 4 days – although none of us are going to get rich backing Frankel on Wednesday.
CHARLIE HILLS (Recent York Stats – 2 winners from his last 9 runners, 22%) – Yes, not had many runners at the track having only taken over from his father in 2011, but with both of those recent winners coming from just 3 juvenile runners then any 2 year-olds they send to post in the coming days will certainly be worth a second glance.
JOHN GOSDEN (Recent York Stats – 8 winners from his last 55 runners, 15%) – Like Cecil, the Gosden camp’s overall York stats are hardly anything to get excited about, but it’s worth noting they are 1-from-3 with their 2 year-olds, but, more importantly, a much-better 5-from-24 (21%) with their older horses at the track.
Trainers You Might Want To Avoid…..
RALPH BECKETT (Recent York Stats – 1 winner from his last 32 runners, 3%) – Horrible reading if you’re a Beckett follower, with that sole success coming with a 3 year-old. Overall they are -£24 at the track and although they are ticking although nicely this season with course stats like these you might want to think twice before lumping on any of their runners this week.
MICK EASTERBY (Recent York Stats – 10 winners from his last 182 runners, 5%) – Sent out 23 winners so far this season, but they are also just 1 from 35 in the last fortnight. Six of their 10 recent York winners came with their older horses, but with only 2 successes from 50 juveniles sent to post then this is something to think about.
KEVIN RYAN (Recent York Stats – 13 winners from his last 185 runners 7%) – With 60 winners so far this term then all is fine in that respect but this track has not really been a happy stomping ground for them in recent years. That said, I wouldn’t put anyone off backing their 2 year-olds here as they have a 15% strike-rate in that area, but being just 2 from 37 (5%) with their 3 year-olds and 3 from 94 (3%) with their older horses then it’s in this area they’ve struggled.
MARK JOHNSTON (Recent York Stats – 14 winners from his last 208 runners, 7%) – Been having a cracking time of late, and they are bound to have plenty of runners over the four days. However, with just 14 overall winners on the Knavesmire from their last 208 runners this is quite an alarming figure. That said, they do have slightly better record with their 2 year-olds (6 from 53), but with only 5 from 82 3 year-old winners, and an even worse 3 from 73 with their older horses they will be hoping to improve those stats in the coming days.
