Stat of the Day, 14th September 2012

After wrong horse syndrome on Wednesday, it was wrong trainer syndrome yesterday! Now I did nominate a 13/2 winner in Majuro (returned 9/2), but I accredited the horse to a trainer who either stopped training or changed his name last year! C Smith was the actual trainer, not Charles Smith, as I’d written. [Amateurish].

To today, and a trip to Esher, and the…

After a good week, it’s a press of the ‘randomizer’ button today, and a selection inspired by an evening spent in the company of the Brendan Powells (both senior and junior) last night.

The first thing I noticed about today’s pick – who is a very big price – is that he’s got a phenomenal record over the distance of this afternoon’s race. Indeed, Scottish Boogie has been placed on six of his seven attempts at the ten furlong trip. The unplaced effort was the first of those seven digs, and his mile and a quarter CV looks thus: 4132133

Ground won’t be an issue for a horse which has won on soft, good to firm, and everything in between. Class? Well, this fella was good enough to run sixth of eighteen in the Irish Lincolnshire over an inadequate mile in March of this year. Since then, he finished third in a decent Cork handicap (worth almost three times as much to the winner as this contest), before running twice over that inadequate mile trip.

First time for Brendan Powell this afternoon, and up to his optimum distance, in a grade which is just fine (two wins in Class 4, and placed form two notches higher), Scottish Boogie has a fair each way chance in an open race at 25/1.

Interestingly enough, Brendan Powell Jr rides Edgeworth, a 25/1 shot here and the possible sole pace in the race. More interestingly, this was Brendan Powell Sr’s charity bet each way. So it might be worth a saver.

But, the official Stat of the Day line is Scottish Boogie, e/w a pleasure, at 25/1 Stan James.
