I do like a good trainer track combo. So how about Donald McCain at Haydock? ‘Son of Ginger’ is 39 from 150 here in the last five seasons, and specifically over hurdles, he’s 28 from 96 (29% strike rate, +28.01 points).
He runs just the one hurdler today, Moss Cloud. On the form of his only rules run, he’s got a bit to find with some of these. But… take a closer look and something interesting unfolds. Our man, Son of Ginger, won this race last year. Hmm. Hello… he also won it in 2011. Hmmm. Blimey, he also won it in 2010. Hmmmm. Well I never did, he only went and won it in 2009 as well. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
To summarise, this race has been run for the past four years only, and Donald has won it every time. His hurdles record at the track is excellent, and this horse is perfectly bred for a real slog in the mud (nags by Cloudings love the mud), and – all other things being equal – it would be reasonable to assume that McCain had other options for this race, in his quest for the nap hand of five wins in a row.
