Good news but mainly bad news yesterday. The good news was we battered the market, and that’s the route to profit, long term. The bad news is that getting 6/1 about a 7/2 loser still returns nothing.

It’s a standing dish this afternoon, in the shape of Bene Lad. Getting on a little at age eleven now, his record here at Kelso is 0FU124102426. And on good to soft ground, he’s 21222.
A winner as recently as two starts back, Bene Lad seems to have run most of his career either here or at Ayr. He’s very consistent, and should have no problem with today’s grade: he won in Class 3 the time before last and this is a lower grade, Class 4 contest.
He’s flexible as regards trip, with his win two runs back over two miles – just a furlong shorter than today – and plenty of his form over two and a half miles or further.
He will have hated the heavy ground this winter and this quicker surface and easier grade look to give him a winning chance. Trainer Jim Goldie’s horses are going ok, if not brilliantly, and at around 10/1 (Stan James, BOG), Bene Lad is worthy of each way support.
