Stat of the Day, 19th April 2013
Very late today, due to a lot of server problems (still unresolved). Hell’s Bay was backed from 10/1 into 8/1 (when nominated here) into 4/1 at the off, but unseated when well beaten at the last. That kind of sums things up at the moment, but we’ll try again today in the…
This staying event is best left to the National Hunt types, and the one I like is Pateese, trained by Philip Hobbs.
Pateese has had five runs in Class 4 events, and been placed each time: 33211 Now those runs were all over obstacles, and that’s because this fellow had his flat career in France before sold and imported to here. But he was good enough to win a soft ground Saint Cloud handicap in his native country, and another decent handicap at Longchamp on good to soft.
In his sole UK flat start, he finished a staying on second (given too much to do) in a Bath handicap over two miles and a furlong, and he’s in good form currently with a last time out win.
Jamie Spencer, who gave him too much to do in that Bath race, takes the ride again, so don’t expect an early challenge today. But, with luck, our boy will be staying on fast and late and take the spoils.
Based on his placed record in the grade, I’m recommending an each way play – also, because I’m woefully out of form this week – and I hope we get some sort of return on our investment at 7/1 Stan James, Best Odds Guaranteed.
[I should add that last year’s winner, Gilded Age, has the same handicap mark today and similar conditions, so might run well at 16/1]
