Close but no Cuban yesterday, as Mr Moonshine was second and Chapter Five was… of course, fourth. We’re at least starting to knock on the door now, and hopefully today we can walk right in, as Black Box once warbled…
The John Porter Stakes has a strong favourite in Noble Mission, a horse that won on this card last year in a maiden. He was a Group 3 winner last year, but the betting vibes suggest he’ll come on for this seasonal bow. In the circumstances, it’s worth chancing one against him, and the one could be Guarantee.
This fellow was progressive last term, culminating in a seventh place in the St Leger. While he was beaten far enough there, he’s expected to be plenty forward enough for this and the mile and a half might suit better than the near mile and seven-eighths of the Leger. He won his maiden here over this trip and on this ground, so conditions look optimal and, in a race lacking much depth, he’s a viable option against the jolly at around 5/1.
Ifandbutwhynot is a tentative selection in a competitive race. He gets in off a light weight and has had a brilliant season, winning three nice races. He steps up in class on those winning efforts here, but is entitled to, and ran really well in the County Hurdle, a race which is working out well. Indeed, already the 15th and 16th from there, Starluck and Claret Cloak, have won. And Clerks Choice, Edgardo Sol and Manyriverstocross have all placed in strong races.
The double pays a general 29/1, with SkyBet, Paddy, Ladbrokes, BetVictor and SportingBet. The ones in bold are best odds guaranteed.
