Daily Dabble, 8th June 2013
I was struck by another bout of deja vu yesterday, as once more we found allied with an unplaced horse. I understand that many of you back the selections as singles too, so you’ll have been pleased with Waverunner’s comfortable 4/1 victory, especially as we’d backed him at 11/2. It was however, a complete irrelevance as far as the double was concerned as Top Offer has already bombed out some 25 minutes earlier.
He seemed to be given a strange ride, being held up as he was and never really got the chance to get involved or land a blow. To finish around 8 lengths outside the places without seeming to have been over exerted seems very odd to me and I assure you I’m not talking through my pocket here. He may not have won or got placed, but I’d have liked to see him have a go.
Today’s selections may look more speculative than usual, but I really do think that both of them have good chances today and as it’s Saturday, anything can happen! We start with the…

Trainer Jeremy Noseda has a 25% strike rate with handicap debutants over the last couple of years and has booked Frankie Dettori to ride Valbchek today. Frankie has won eight of his previous fifteen rides for Mr Noseda on this course and looks to be an interesting proposition in a wide open race. Valbchek was running in much better company last season, being sent off in three pattern races at average odds of around 6/1 after having won his first two races , both over today’s 6f trip. He returns to racing having been gelded and you’d expect that he’s have a little too much class for most of his rivals here today. I can only assume it’s the openness of the race and his 8-month absence from the track that has prompted him to be as long as 14/1 in places, but I think he has an excellent chance today if ready.

Anquetta comes here in great form and seeks a hat trick today. This 9 yr old has, of course, risen in the weights as a result of those back to back wins, but his handlers have decided to step him up in trip to try to keep ahead of the handicapper. The step up in trip and the weight factor do however mean that we’ll get a decent price about the selection this evening (7/1 was available at 10.10am). This one has made the frame in over half of his 17 chases to date: winning five of them and is partnered by David Bass today and they are 3/7 together.
The double pays 119/1 today and the place part is priced at a shade under 10/1 (9.80/1 to be precise!), both with Stan James (BOG, of course!).
Back Valbchek and Anquetta in an each way double with Stan James, the win part paying 119/1 (Best Odds Guaranteed)
