Methaaly was placed at 8/1 yesterday but West Leake Hare rather let the side down, despite seeing strong support.
Onto today and a couple of well contested handicaps, teeing off in the….
2.50 Salisbury
Gladiatrix is a tough and consistent sort, and wins her share of races. Five furlongs is her trip and she ran much the best last time from a poor draw, when beaten less than a length by the re-opposing Asian Trader. Here, she’s drawn next to that horse, and with Richard Hughes taking over from competent but not top class Michael Murphy, those small differences could bring about a reversal of the placings.
Asian Trader is open to improvement and looks the one to beat, but Gladiatrix is a solid each way selection.
5.45 Doncaster
The second leg is a mile handicap for three-year-olds and I’m taking the progressive Freeport to cement his seasonal debut win at Windsor the last day. Owned by Raymond Tooth, whose racing manager is of course our very own Tony Stafford, connections feel the horse will have improved a fair bit since his win 20 days ago. He hails from the bang-in-form Brian Meehan stable and this is his trip and grade, for now at least.
The non-runner means there are only two places to go at, but we’ll get a quarter the odds, and I think the selection has a pretty strong win chance in any case.
The double pays 23/1 BOG today with Stan James.
Back Gladiatrix & Freeport in an each way double with Stan James, the win part paying 23/1 (Best Odds Guaranteed)
