Stat of the Day, 18th June 2013

A good start to the new week yesterday as our selection Poyle Thomas came home at an SP of 3/1. We’d actually thought 9/4 wasn’t a bad price, so we’re pleased to take the extra 0.75 of a point. As Tesco will have us believe: every little helps!

Now, there’s apparently a small meeting taking place in Berkshire today and I believe the Queen might be there, but SotD won’t be! We’re going to look elsewhere for today’s selection, so we’re off across the Irish Sea for the….

7.20 Sligo

Short and sweet today, folks: Noel C Kelly has a fantastic record here at Sligo with six winners from just sixteen runners, including the winner of this race last year. That 37.5% strike rate is responsible for some 58.6pts profit, which is an astounding 366.25% return on stakes.

Noel has just the one runner today and it’s last year’s winner Mighty Whitey attempting to defend his crown. As he did indeed win this race last year, he already has a course and distance win under his belt, but his overall record here at Sligo reads 11551, three wins from five for a mere 57.2pts profit!

He won this race last year off a mark of 56 and is allocated 61 today, but jockey Connor King is able to make use of a 7lb claim today, more than negating the rise in his mark. And even without the claim, our selection is bottom weight today in what doesn’t look a great contest. He reopposes last year’s runner-up and third placed horse, who are both 2lbs worse off then last year, so we should effectively have a 4lb pull with the jockey claim.

I’m more than happy with the Sligo record of both horse and trainer and whilst we’re not going to get the 16/1 odds from last year’s victory, 4/1 BOG with Paddy Power on Mighty Whitey looks more than fair today….
