Daily Dabble, 23rd June 2013
It was of course yet another of those one from two days which have frustrated the hell out of me of late. I know I’m not a million miles away, but I’m not quite there either.
Both of Saturday’s runners were well fancied, so Silken Express proved to be a bit of a disappointment as she was very one-paced and never looked like getting near to the form she had shown on her previous outings over the minimum trip.
This made race 2 another dead rubber, but one in which we managed another place. Diman Waters attracted plenty of support during the day going from a morning 11/2 into 3/1 at the off. He looked to have every chance of winning, but had to settle for the runner-up slot after being outstripped late on by the diminutive Script: a 16/1 outsider.
This now leaves me with one more opportunity to repair a pretty poor week and I’ll start with the…
I’m siding with the well-rested Art History here, who should be returning to the track nice and fresh after a break of almost five months. This might be a worry to some, but trainer David O’Meara is a master of getting horses to run well straight after a break (strike rates in excess of 20%). This horse was only beaten by 3/4 of a length last time out at Wolverhampton and was staying on strongly at the finish, so stamina won’t be the reason for any defeat today. Three of the four horses behind him that day have run and won since then, so the omens are good there too. If he runs to anything like that level of form, there’s no reason why he can’t at least make the frame at odds of around 6/1 to give us a shot at the…
Roger Varian has a knack of getting his horses to fire on their handicap debut and he’s hoping to repeat the trick with Huffoof (as big as 9/1 in places) this afternoon. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to disregard her latest outing when she was 5th at Lingfield on totally unsatisfactorily testing ground, but we should remember the promise she showed when placed on her other two maiden runs on much firmer surfaces. She does like to get out early and make the pace and if allowed to dictate affairs has every chance of making a top two finish at decent odds. Today’s trip of 10 furlongs shouldn’t be any issue either.
