Barkston Ash could never land a blow last night, and it was a surprise result with the winner coming down the middle of course at 9/1 and beating a 20/1 shot. Our fellow was sent off the 4/1 joint favourite, but could only muster fifth place among the eleven runner field.

This is a claiming race, Class 4. So it’s something of a surprise to see dual Group 2 winner, King Torus, in the line up. Naturally, he’s not in the same form as he was back in 2010 when he picked up those valuable pots (and also in 2011 when he won a Listed prize), but he still has the ability to pull these around.

On the prevailing good to firm ground, he’s won four of his six races, and all of his five career victories have been in fields of eleven or fewer. Little wonder, then, that he didn’t enjoy the cavalry charge back end contests – 30, 18 and 16 runners – that he contested.

King Torus ran five times last season, the first two in Listed company, and the other three in those big handicaps. In 2011, he ran five times too, in three Listed events, a Group 3, and a Class 3. He won one of the Listed events and the Class 3.

This is the lowest grade he’s run in since his debut, when he won a Class 4 maiden, and he might be rejuvenated for that. He might also improve for a change of stable – now trained by Jamie Osborne – or for the fact he’s a fresh horse.

In any case, he’s the classiest nag on show here, and could easily win.

The racecard for this contest is here.

Odds of 7/1 with bet365, BOG, are worth taking, each way. As always, do…
