Daily Dabble, 1st July 2013

Well, June ended with more of a whimper than a bang, I’m afraid. The earlier withdrawal of Presto Volante from race 2 meant that we were already faced with the prospect of just an E/W single on Dorback, but I did think we’d get some kind of return there.

He led to around halfway as I’d hoped, but faded very badly and in the final two furlongs or so, he slipped back through the field to eventually finish 9th of 12, some 9 lengths shy of the winner and a good 7 lengths outside the places. He has been profitable to follow of late, but I think I’ll be putting him on the back burner until he comes back down to a more workable mark.

Let’s try to kick July off with a winner (or two!), starting in the…

3.45 Wolverhampton

It pays financially to follow Alan McCabe’s runners in claiming races with E/W profits of over 47pts from 21 such contests in the last couple of years and he has Dubawi Phantom making his debut for the yard after a career of 23 races for 3 other trainers in the past. The yard does well with its debutants (66% ROI from 41 runners) and it is hoped that the change of yard and taking the horse to a track it has never raced on before will reignite its fortunes, for it has been largely poor since last winning a year ago. The introduction to a new A/W track might seem like a last throw of the dice, but Alan McCabe is a dab hand at this kind of thing too: as 43pts profit from 36 Wolverhampton debutants will testify. On form alone, we’ve little chance today, but if anyone can spark some life into Dubawi Phantom, it’s Alan McCabe and as such, 8/1 BOG doesn’t look too shabby, but time will tell!

7.45 Ffos Las

Where I’ve gone with Greyemkay who looks a decent prospect at odds as large as 13/2 in places. He won here last September and has been knocking on the door of late and looks set to step up to the plate in what looks a pretty weak affair. He was third lat time out at Warwick off today’s mark and a similar performance should actually be enough to land this one. He does like to be held up, but as long as he’s not kept too far away from the leaders, i expect him to stay on well and make us a profit.

Today’s double pays 133/2 BOG today with Bet365 with the place element is a shade under 5/1 at 4.98/1.

Back Dubawi PhantomGreyemkay in an each way double with Bet365, the win part paying 66.5/1 (Best Odds Guaranteed)
