Catterick Placepot Picks, 3rd July 2013
Another placepot landed, another disappointing dividend yesterday at Stratford. Let’s have a pop at the big fields in the second half of this afternoon’s Catterick placepot and see if that brings a bigger payoff, and if we can actually claim a slice of it…
2.30 – Leg 1: With the form of those to have run not seeming to amount to much, I’m going to side with two newcomers from yards that always have them ready first time: Richard Fahey’s Birkacre, and Ed McMahon’s Flair For Fashion.
Noble Reach might be the best of those to have run, but I’m going narrow early today, so just the unraced pair.
A – 1 (Birkacre), 3 (Flair For Fashion)
3.00 – Leg 2: Oriental Relation. Banker.
A – 1 (Oriental Relation)
3.30 – Leg 3: Miss Macnamara will probably win if repeating her course and distance win last time. Tartan Jura probably wants it softer, and Amir Pasha wins over shorter on the flat, so Jan Smuts is the most likely place rival.
A – 5 (Jan Smuts), 6 (Miss Macnamara)
4.00 – Leg 4: A big field seven furlong contest, and the pace looks to be evenly split. West Leake Hare and Our Boy Jack look solid at the top of the market, with slight preference for the former, a hold up tupe usually that should see them come back to him.
Chookie Avon, Oil Strike and Kuwait Star all have some sort of chance, and the money for Solar Spirit – from smart enough connections – is hard to ignore.
A – 2 (Our Boy Jack), 13 (West Leake Hare)
B – 3 (Solar Spirit), 9 (Chookie Avon), 11 (Kuwait Star), 14 (Oil Strike)
4.30 – Leg 5: A non-winners of two race and most of these are fairly exposed meaning it’s a poor race. The favourite, Duke Of Destiny, has been second plenty, which merits inclusion here. But really we’re going to have to try to get him beaten out of the frame. I think My New Angel’s chance has been under-estimated. She’s been second the last twice she’s run over seven furlongs, including when a 33/1 shot last time, and she might go close again at a placepot-busting price.
Legal Bond is top-rated but has been stuffed in sellers the last twice and, while this is of seller quality, he’s been stuffed both tries at seven furlongs too. Not for me. Mrs Warren on the other hand has been close up in her last two races – better races than this – and looks a player. She might win. And Gladsome will also enjoy this trip.
It’s a shocking race, and if Duke is out of the frame, anything could happen. Hopefully we’ll catch one of our trio of alternatives.
A – 2 (Duke Of Destiny), 14 (Mrs Warren)
B – 4 (Gladsome), 11 (My New Angel)
5.00 – Leg 6: A competitive mile and a half handicap, where it will likely pay to be close to the pace. My three against the field are Slide Show, Light The City, and Ailsa Craig, all three having a number of things in their favour, not least that they tend to race prominently.
A – 3 (Ailsa Craig), 8 (Light The City), 11 (Slide Show)
Just A’s – 2 x 1 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 48 bets
All picks – 2 x 1 x 2 x 6 x 4 x 3 = 288 bets
