Double Dutch, 23rd September 2013

Well, just when you start to think something can’t possibly get any worse, you’re proved wrong yet again!

Sunday was an absolutely terrible day for the Double Dutch, as Whistling Senator and Green Bank finished 2nd & 3rd, but were well beaten by 14 lengths and 53 lengths respectively.

This ment that race 2 was now a formaility and I couldn’t even salvage a bit of pride from that one. Safe Investment was pulled up well before the finish and Alderbrook Lad only managed to snatch 2nd place on the line for a10 lengths defeat.

Yesterday’s results were as follows:

Whistling Senator : 2nd
Green Bank: 3rd
———————————
Alderbrook Lad: 2nd
Safe Investment: PU

Two poor results for me  just about put the icing on the cake of a weekend that won’t go down as one of my finest, but as it’s Monday, it’s the start of a whole new and another seven “opportunities” to redress the balance starting with the…

Almuheet holds a Derby entry and was a nice winner on debut at Newmarket,  where he beat the well-regarded Red Galileo, who has since gone on to compete in and finish 2nd in two Class 2 events, including going down by just a head in a Conditions race at Newbury on Saturday. If the form of his Newmarket win can be franked, then the 9/4 on offer at Paddy Power could be a good thing.

It would be an even better bet, had Stars Above Me not been entered for this one. She’s getting 10lbs from Almuheet today as she seeks to go one better than her runner-up finish on debut in a Goodwood maiden that has already produced several winners.

She was a length and a half behind Valonia that day, but the five horses immediately behind her that day have since contested 10 races between them, producing six wins (all 5 have won at least once) and two placed finishes. Those runners include Coral Mist who took Saturday’s Group 3 Firth of Clyde Stakes beating the afore-mentioned Valonia in the process.

If Stars Above Me can emulate those rivals, she’s a very good chance of taking this at 13/8 (Betfred)

4.10 Hamilton

Hopes N Dreams has a very good record here at this track with 5 victories from just 6 attempts over course and distance, including one win on soft ground, so the cut underfoot shouldn’t be an issue for her today. She’s still generally on the rise and comes here in good form, having won 4 of her last 7 outings over the past three months. I fancy her to take this at around 15/8 (BetVictor)

The main challenge is likely to come Colonel Mak, providing his run in Saturday’s Ayr Silver Cup hasnt taken too much out of him. He was poorly drawn in that race and was coming back off a seven week break, so perhaps his poor show was to be expected. He’s another with a good record here, having won three times from five starts, all over C&D and on ground ranging from Good to Firm right through to Heavy, just two months ago.

If he bounces back, he stands a very good chance today and the 9/4 on offer might hold some value.

4 x 0.5pt BOG doubles all as follows:
Stars Above Me/ Hopes N Dreams @ 7.23 with Betfred
Stars Above Me/ Colonel Mak @ 8.55 with Betfred
Almuheet / Hopes N Dreams @ 9.36 with BetVictor
Almuheet / Colonel Mak @ 10.56 with a choice of Paddy Power, Coral or Hills
