Double Dutch, 24th November 2013

The evening started well enough as Porteous stayed on well to score for us at 5/2 to land her second win inside three days, but we were blown a way by an unlikely 9/1 winner a couple of hours later to foil our double.

The best we could manage was the runner-up, beaten by some five lengths.

Yesterday’s results were as follows:

Porteous: won at 5/2 (SP 9/4)
Kodafine: 3rd at 7/2
———————————
Tabaayun: 2nd at 6/4 (SP 11/10)
Alakhan: u/p at 5/2

Not a lot to choose from today, but I’ve got a race from each side of the Irish Sea to aim at today…

1.25 Navan:

Azorian absolutely bolted up at Cork three weeks ago, winning by 21 lengths over today’s trip despite easing down towards the finish. he’ll not want the ground any firmer than it currently stands, but there’s little danger of it improving enough to upset him here. If he steps up to the plate, I’d expect him to take this one at 2/1, even if it won’t be as easy as last time out!

You can make claims about two or three of his rivals for the back-up role, but my vote goes to Carriganog, who currently trades around the 5/2 mark. As the only 4yr old in the race, he gets a healthy weight allowance for his age and his cause will be aided by the presence of AP McCoy on his back. he tops the official ratings in this one and comes here defending a perfect 2 from 2 record over hurdles.

2.05 Exeter:

Sonofvic was also 2 from 2 over hurdles at one point in his short (today is only this 8yr old’s 7th outing in three years!) career, before he was switched to chasing where his record reads 251, but the first two races were at Grade 2 level, before he won over this course and distance almost five weeks ago. The Nicholls yard is starting to fire again and I fancy them to add another 7/4 winner to their long list of successes.

The main danger must be According to Trev who won both of his first two chase contests before finishing third to the impressive Twirling Magnet over today’s trip at Cheltenham last time out. He was stepping up to Class 2 that day and wasn’t disgraced in losing by 7 lengths that day. He gets 4lbs from the favourite here and that might just make him a real contender at odds of around the 9/4 mark.
