Double Dutch, 30th November 2013

Yesterday was one of those days we get from time to time when things go badly awry. It was a day to forget, where it seemed I couldn’t even pick my own nose!

We got 4th in both 6-horse races, plus another unseated rider and the final ignominy of Marcret finishing stone last!

Yesterday’s results were as follows:

The Mumper: 4th of 6! (SP 5/2)
Highbury High: UR at 7/4
———————————
That’s Plenty: 4th of 6! (SP 15/8)
Marcret: 6th of 6! (SP 9/4)

At the end of a topsy-turvy week, we’ve still just about got our heads above water, but I’m hopeful/expectant about ending the month on a high with a couple of winners from these races:

12.20 Newbury:

Vicky De L’Oasis has travelled over from Ireland to defend her 100% (2/2) hurdles record after joining the Mullins yard from France where she signed with a hat-trick of bumper wins and one narrow defeat. She’ll probably enjoy the drop back in trip today too and looks the likeliest to take this at 5/4 (Ladbrokes)

Free Thinking ranks as the main danger after the impressive win at Ludlow on her hurdling debut 16 days ago. She absolutely breezed home with plenty to spare and still won by some 13 lengths. If she’s in a similar kind of mood here today (same jockey on board), then she could upset the favourite by scoring at 100/30 (Betfred)

12.55 Fairyhouse:

Smashing is another 4yr old import from France running for Willie Mullins today, This one is a pretty smart hurdler and chaser and was a winner of listed handicaps over the summer. He was placed in both efforts over larger obstacles before changing hands for 130,000 Euros and now makes his Irish hurdling bow. At 4yr old, there’s plenty of scope for improvement and carrying bottom weight today will make him hard to beat at 11/8 (Seanie Mac).

If however, he doesn’t fire first time, then I’d expect Speckled Wood to be waiting in the wings to seize his chance at 5/2 (Paddy Power). She pretty much sets the standard to beat in this race, since other than unseating her rider two starts ago, has never failed to be in the first four home in 9 starts, winning three times in a form line reading 3211324U1.  She stayed on well to score at Wexford 11 days ago and won’t be lacking in stamina again today. This could be a very good contest between the two.

4 x 0.5pt BOG doubles as follows:
Vicky De L’Oasis / Smashing @ 5.24 with Seanie Mac and/or Boylesports
Vicky De L’Oasis / Speckled Wood @ 7.35 with Paddy Power
Free Thinking / Smashing @ 8.92 with Seanie Mac, Boylesports & Paddy Power
Free Thinking / Speckled Wood @ 13.13 with Paddy Power
