Double Dutch, 15th March 2014
No joy on the double front yesterday, but there was still a couple of highlights to take from the day.
The Ring Is King battled on well and stayed on strongly to grind out a narrow victory by a head in the late race at Dundalk and despite our selections from race 1 having failed to win, it couldn’t mar our enjoyment of the race.
The race in question was, of course, the Gold Cup and we were lucky enough to witness one of the most exciting finishes in recent history.
The best we could get was Silviniaco Conti’s fourth-place finish, but such was the competitive nature of the race that our runner was less than two lengths behind shock winner Lord Windermere.
At the risk of sounding cheesy, racing really was the winner yesterday.
Yesterday’s results were as follows:
Silviniaco Conti: 4th at 11/4 (adv 4/1)
Bobs Worth: 5th at 6/4 (adv 9/4)
The Ring Is King: won at 9/4 (adv 7/2)
Home Secretary: 5th of 6 at 3/1 (adv 5/1)
Results to date:
181 winning selections from 633 = 28.59%
61 winning bets in 167 days = 36.53%
P/L : +52.27pts (+15.84% ROI)
The Festival has gone for another year, but we’ve still plenty or racing to aim at in the coming weeks, starting today with the…
Just four go to post here for this one, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a fascinating contest for what promises to be a rematch between Itoldyou and West Cork Flash.
Itoldyou beat West Cork Flash by eight lengths here three weeks over a half-mile shorter trip than today’s 3m2.5f. But the step up in trip won’t pose too many problems here, as his record at 3 miles and beyond reads 2313 and despite him being 6lbs worse off for today’s contest, his stamina is proven and I fancy him to take this at 2/1 BOG.
West Cork Flash is sure to be closer than that last 8 lengths margin of defeat, given that he’s better off at the weights and I’m confident that he’ll stay this longer trip today. He has attempted 3 miles and beyond on four occasions and despite not winning any of them, only a fall at the last fence over course and distance was the only time he failed to complete the race.
And despite being completely tailed off in a race over 3m6f in the past, he still had the stamina and desire to complete the course, when many others would have given up the ghost. I’m not sure he’s well priced here, but he can be backed at 2/1 BOG with Bet365.
Benny The Swinger has been running well but without much reward of late. This race represents a drop in class and on better ground than he has faced in recent runs and the standard of his recent fourth place at Taunton is probably the best piece of form he has shown for a good while and an easing in his weight can only help him take what looks a fairly poor contest. He’s currently available at 5/2 BOG with PP for this one.
Morestead, however, looks a more likely winner and the small 5-runner field will suit him nicely. He’s a three-times course winner, twice over course and distance and was putting in some consistently good performances around Christmas time when he finished second in three successive races, but the total margin of the defeats added up to less than four lengths with two of the three races here at Fontwell.
Morestead has also now slipped to a very competitive mark, some 6lbs lower than his last victory, which was also over course and distance and today he’s 3/1 BOG to repeat the feat.
4 x 0.5pt BOG doubles, as follows:
Itoldyou / Benny The Swinger @ 8.75/1 (2/1 & 9/4 : Bet365)
Itoldyou / Morestead @ 11/1 (2/1 & 3/1 : Bet365)
West Cork Flash / Benny The Swinger @ 8.75/1 (2/1 & 9/4 : Bet365)
West Cork Flash / Morestead @ 11/1 (2/1 & 3/1 : Bet365)
