After yesterday’s cockup on the communications front, it’s a ‘no prices available’ yet offering for Wednesday, due to the fact I’ll be airborne/bedbound when the prices are available. I’ll try to check in before bed tonight (about 5am GMT), but no promises.

1.05 Punchestown:

A thirteen runner maiden hurdle but probably only three that can win. The two to focus on are Wrath Of Titans and Mr Diablo. The former, trained by Dessie Hughes, won a Thurles bumper on similar ground and then ran well in better races last season. He ought to win on what he’s shown, unless the ex-pointers turn out to be useful, and the only niggle is that he might be after a handicap mark. If he’s weak in the betting, that might imply a mark-seeking effort. The stable and jockey are both in fine form at the moment, despite the sad illness of trainer Dessie Hughes.

Good job then that we also have Mr Diablo in our corner. He won a 16 runner course and distance bumper when last seen in May and, if able to translate that form over hurdles, will give Hughes’ horse a race. Again, top of the ground looks optimal.

4.20 Worcester:

Another maiden hurdle, this time with just eight runners declared. Sykes is the form pick, based on a fair run in a Newton Abbot bumper on soft ground. Expected to appreciate this stiffer test, Philip Hobbs’ runner can add to the in-form stable’s seven winners in the past fortnight.

Against him are a couple of ex-pointers, and the more likely of the pair of Ruth Curtis’ Moral Hazard. Curtis is in excellent fettle just now, and has a very strong one year and five year record at the track to boot. She’s deployed the McCoy (AP) for the job, so clearly a big run is expected.

Paul Webber’s Copperfacejack is the fly in the ointment. Second in maiden point, it remains to be seen how good he is. Hopefully, not good enough to be better than second!
