Steel Rain actually ran a lot better than his finishing position suggested on Wednesday. Despite being sent off 25/1, and finishing no better than tenth of 16, he was only beaten three lengths. He’ll likely get dropped another couple of pounds for this, and his return to the winners’ enclosure looks imminent. Without another duck egg on his score card, the price ought to be tasty, and I’ve added him to my Geegeez Tracker.
Amateur riders for Thursday, and the…
Not to everyone’s tastes are these, but if you can find a horse with a winning chance, and a rider that can actually push and shove, you will generally have a value proposition. We”ll take our chances here with the jolly, Speed Check.
Don Cantillon’s 7yo gelding has won three of his last six races. In the same number of efforts, his ten rivals have claimed just four between them.
Speed Check is a course and distance winner, and backed that up with a very close third over track and trip at the start of the month. So there are no worries on that score, and nor are there concerns about the ground, which is good.
The wily Don Cantillon has won with two of his last four starters, and has saddled three winners, and four further placers, at the track since 2009 from just ten efforts.
We’re taking a punt on the jockey who, as far as I can tell, is having her first ride in public, but Don doesn’t suffer fools so it is assumed she can steer, a talent which might be enough in a pretty weak looking contest.
5/2 is generally available, and that’s our win wager.
