Stat of the Day, 1st November 2014
Slipper Orchid was another podium finish for us. He was given a lot to do and couldn’t reel in the more prominently-ridden Pelerin, eventually finishing third, a neck behind the second, at 11/2. For all of that, it’s a loser on the score sheet, and I’d like a winner to boost morale.
I’ve had a decent bet on Saturday’s Stat of the Day, so fingers crossed, he can change our luck.
A small but select field for this Listed race over a mile. The one to be on looks to be French Navy, a Godolphin runner returning from a break.
He’s trained by Charlie Appleby, a man with a +29.51 level stake profit at Newmarket since taking out a licence a couple of seasons ago. He’s ridden by Adam Kirby, who has a 21% strike rate at Newmarket in the past year, for a level stakes profit of 12.33 units.
The horse himself has the coveted ‘line of green’ in Instant Expert, and won’t mind anything from good ground to soft. French Navy has won five of 13 races in Listed or better class, including this race two years ago. He’s a dual Group 3 winner, so actually drops in class against his best form.
The mile trip has seen him win two of his four starts, with a silver and a bronze in the other pair; and he has two wins over the course.
He’ll probably be held up off a fair pace set by any or all of Ocean Tempest, Boom And Bust, and Emell, and will have Bronze Angel to beat most likely.
French Navy is available at 3/1 with both BetVictor and Coral, BOG. 1 point win.
