We didn’t break the bank yesterday, but we did get our selves back on the scoresheet with a very satisfactory pair of A/W winners.

Easy Tiger made a winning start to handicap racing, taking his career tally to 2 from 2 with a fairly lunchtime comfortable win at Lingfield, despite the official margin only being a neck. He seemed to have plenty in reserve and another canny ride from the in-form Martin Dwyer was well timed.

This win then meant a wait of over seven hours before our Dundalk race, which went well for us with both our runners finishing in the first two home and only separated by half a length, some 4 lengths clear of the next runner. The icing on the cake for us was that our slightly longer priced horses, Great Dancer beat the favourite Solomon Northup to maximise our returns.

All of which meant a nice 8.75/1 double on the day with the added bonus of a modest £4.70 exacta from race 2.

2.05 Wetherby:

Trainer Daniel Skelton is 25/101 in handicap chases so far in his fairly short training career and 25pts level stakes profits from those runners make him profitable to follow. Harry Skelton generally rides most of these runners and he’s 21/90 on them and they look well set for another good show here today from bottom weighted and 9/4 BOG chance What A Good Night.

The horse has form in the mud and gets the trip well, he also has a good record in these smaller fields and has been running very well of late. He was a comfortable winner two starts ago on his yard debut and looked set to follow that up last time out, but for falling 2 fences from home, when 12 lengths clear! A clear round today gives What A Good Night every chance of getting back into the winners’ enclosure.

The big danger is the consistent and in-form Shouldavboughtgold, who looks well treated under a 7lb penalty for his win at Carlisle on Monday. There he ended a sequence of four consecutive runner-up finishes by winning by 19 lengths, despite a mistake at the last and also being eased right down. On that performance, 7lbs mightn’t be enough to stop him, especially as he’s retained the services of James Reveley from last time.

James is on top of his game at the moment, winning 5 from 19 in the last week alone and his ability was shown in the way he virtually dragged Categorical to victory at Newcastle yesterday. NH winners who are quickly turned out often go on to win again and you can get 11/4 BOG about that happening here for Shouldavboughtgold.

2.15 Uttoxeter:

Nafaath has never run on heavy ground in an NH race yet, but has won twice and been the runner-up once from five starts on heavy ground on the Flat. He proved over the summer that he stays on the Flat, finishing second in a couple of decent 2m handicaps at Chester and Chepstow in August, when beaten by less than half a length on both occasions. He’s actually 2P2 on soft ground over hurdles, including a runner-up finish at Carlisle last time out.

That run at Carlisle was his return to hurdling after a 22 months period spend on the Flat and he’s sure to come on for the experience. Coming from the McCain yard, you know he’ll have been extensively schooled and his past liking for heavy ground could very make all the difference here, giving Nafaath an excellent chance at a best price of 11/4 BOG.

And in a race that could become very attritional due to conditions, I’m going to add Last Shadow to the mix. Three wins and a place from six efforts on soft ground or worse suggest he’ll relish the conditions on his return to hurdling and he’s well treated here based on a very high Flat rating, where he runs at a much higher level than this. His decent form on the Flat will give him the ground speed required between the hurdles and although he has yet to win from four attempts over timber, his jumping has appeared to be sound.

Last Shadow comes here off the back of a lengthy absence from the track, but represents a yard renowned for getting them ready first time up, so I’m not too concerned about the layoff and if Nafaath isn’t quite up to the task, we could have a winner here at 9/4 BOG.
