Stat of the Day, 23rd March 2015
My stint in the chair began with what amounted to an even money winner but, as is the case with Stat of the Day, it wasn’t through backing an even money shot. Rather, we were on Malt Gem each way at 12/1, and his fourth placed finish in a field of sixteen (no non-runners, amazingly) clawed a bit of jam out of the pot for us.
Poor Davy Russell had an otherwise horror day. Having already received the unexplainable news that he’s somehow lost the ride on dual Cheltenham Festival winner, Lord Windermere, he then had a terrible fall in which he sustained a broken arm. Tough luck, Davy.
It’s competitive trappy stuff today, but I think I’ve found a bit of a chance for us in the…
Arguably little more than a dog race at the latest home of televised dog racing, this 0-100 handicap chase looks thin on improvers. As such, I’m siding with the course form of Wicklewood.
Mark Gillard’s nine year old has an excellent track record, having raced here eight times with form figures of 1313215F. All those runs were in handicap chases, and at that this course and distance his record reads 11.
Both of those wins were in today’s basement class, and returned SP’s of 8/1 and 6/1. Although today’s going is expected to be a touch quicker than Wicklewood is used to, he has plenty of placed form on good ground.
Trainer Mark Gillard had a winner yesterday and his form in the past fortnight is 224F26331, so the team are in good nick.
The shape of the race looks good, with Grand Article likely to kick on, and our lad will probably stalk them and be best placed to strike late on… if good enough!
He is nine pounds higher than his last win, and might prefer a touch more juice in the ground, but 11/1 with Coral accommodates those points nicely enough to justify each way support on a tricky day’s racing.
