Double Dutch, 11th June 2015

I really fancied Roy Rocket at brighton yesterday and had a few quid on him as a side bet, meaning I was very happy to see him stay on well with something in hand at 3/1, as the favourite Cabuchon failed to deliver once again, beaten by over 8 lengths and the last of five to finish.

Buoyed by the winner, I was looking forward to completing a nice double 10 minutes later at Beverley, but as it seems to be at the moment for DD, things didn’t exactly go to plan. Debt Free Dame was well fancied by other people and not just us, but despite shortening from our 5/2 into a very tight 7/4 at the off, she was weak at the finish and slipped from a decent position a furlong out to finish 6th.

Cadeaux Pearl was sent off at a decent 4/1, but like Debt Free Dame was also a bit toothless in the closing stages, eventually finishing 4th, beaten by 2.5 lengths behind a resurgent 25/1 shot. Looking at all the results across the country yesterday, it was one of those days for big-priced winners.

Wednesday’s results were as follows:

Roy Rocket : WON at 3/1 (adv 5/2)
Cabuchon : 5th at 2/1 (adv 2/1)
Cadeaux Pearl : 4th at 4/1 (adv 9/2)
Debt Free Dame : 6th at 7/4 (adv 5/2)

Evening action awaits us on Thursday…

7.10 Uttoxeter:

Polstar was better than the 4 length margin of victory over this minimum trip a week ago would suggest, he had plenty in hand and was able to ease down on the run-in without any dangers. He does, of course, carry a penalty for the win, but is still 2lbs well in, based on what his future mark will be, so he’s turned out again quickly in a bid to take advantage of that.

Conditions look favourable for him here, the same 7lb claimer is on board from last week and although his career record of 3 from 14 isn’t brilliant, it’s not bad and closer inspection shows he’s 3 from 5 (15141) over 2m/2m1f over hurdles on good ground, making Polstar a decent shout at 11/4 BOG.

Supernoverre won’t let him have it all his own way, though, and looks dangerous here off the back of a good runner-up finish over this course and distance last time out. He was running after a break of 229 days that day and travelled well throughout, but lacked the finishing speed required and was outsprinted to the line by the winner, Baraboy, who prevailed by just three quarters of a length.

In fairness, Supernoverre probably needed the run to shake off some rustiness and it should be noted that Baraboy’s ground speed was sufficient to then go on and win a 10f handicap at Ayr 3 days ago! This looks an interesting contrest and Supernoverre is likely to be in the mix once more and can be backed at 7/2 BOG today.

7.50 Haydock:

I selected Landing Night for Stat of the Day last Friday, taking 3/1 BOG about him before he eventually won at 5/6 for a second win on the bounce and one that took his record over 5f to 153311 and 2 from 2 wearing cheekpieces. He’s rated 6lbs higher today, but is still well in under the penalty and receives a healthy 7lb age allowance here.

He wasn’t overexerted last week and was ridden patiently and when the time came he put the race to bed pretty quickly. It was a very efficient performance, doing just enough to put daylight between him and the pack, before easing off the gas again. This is, of course, tougher, but I still like Landing Night here at 9/4 BOG.

The one I expect to challenge him is Richard Hughes’ mount Newton’s Law who returned from an 8 month break on Saturday to run a very creditable second in a Class 2 contest at Epsom on Derby Day. Only Ashpan Sam, (ridden by Mr Hughes!) beat him that day and there were decent types (OR 80-93) behind him.

He’s sure to strip fitter for having had the run and with his rider in excellent form at present, Newton’s Law could make this really interesting at a fairly generous 7/2 BOG.

4 x 0.5pt BOG doubles as follows:

Polstar / Landing Night @ 11.19/1 (11/4 & 9/4 : Coral, Hills & SkyBet)
Polstar / Newton’s Law @ 15.88/1 (11/4 & 7/2 : Coral)
Supernoverre / Landing Night @ 13.63/1 (7/2 & 9/4 : Hills & SkyBet)
Supernoverre / Newton’s Law @ 18.50/1 (7/2 & 100/30 : Bet365)
