Double Dutch, 1st July 2015

We managed to sign June off with a winning double at 8.84/1, coupled with a modest 4.2/1 exacta from race 1.

More Mischief was a slight drifter from 6/4 to 13/8, but justified favouritism by getting the better of Kerrymerry inside the final furlong to win half a length. Obviously it would have been better for us had Kerrymerry hung on, after we’d taken 4/1 about the 9/4 shot.

Nevertheless, we got the 1-2 and had a winning stake to take to race 2 at Stratford, where Noble Friend did the business at the advised 11/4, scoring by 2.5 lengths with our other pick, Porters War, back in 4th place and pretty well beaten.

Tuesday’s results were as follows:

More Mischief : WON at 13/8 (adv 6/4)
Kerrymerry : 2nd at 9/4 (adv 4/1)
The Exacta paid £5.20 here.

Noble Friend : WON at 11/4 (adv 11/4)

July’s quest starts with the following…

2.40 Perth:

I’d expect this to go the way of a couple of Irish raiders with the most likely to succeed being the 9/4 BOG Xaarcet. Both his trainer and jockey are in good form and both have excellent records on this track and the team will hope for a good run from this yard debutant. Gordon Elliott does have a tremendous record with newcomers to his yard and could well get a bit more from this horse today.

Not that he has been running badly, that is. He finished 25331 in his last five starts for the Tizzard yard, all over hurdles and if his obvious ability and confidence can be transferred to the bigger fences, than Xaarcet will have every chance here. One thing is for sure, you know he’ll have been extensively schooled for it!

The second Irish runner is St Maxime, a 7yr old mare who seems to be getting the hang of handicap chasing and comes here off the back of two good runs at Downpatrick, where she wasn’t beaten by far either time in finishing 4th and 3rd. She’s still unexposed over fences and has improved for each of her 5 efforts to date.

St Maxime also seems to have struck up a decent rapport with her 7lb claimer jockey who was on board for those two decent runs at Downpatrick and is back in the hotseat again today. This isn’t the the toughest of races and she could spring a surprise at 4/1 BOG off a mark of 95 before the claim.

2.50 Worcester:

Wak A Turtle is 232 over fences, having finished as a runner-up here at Worcester over an inadequate 16.5f three weeks ago. His previous run over fences, however was some 21 months earlier and it’s worth noting that during that absence he wasn’t lay in a field somewhere, he was competing in and winning PTP races (3 from 8 between the flags).

He looked like he needed further last time out and with stamina confirmed via the PTP runs, he does look the one to watch in a race that lacks any real form and it may well be that he’ll need even further than this today, but stepping up in trip by 3.5f could well be just enough for Wak A Turtle to record a first win under Rules at 11/4 BOG.

Lord of the Dunes, on the other hand, hasn’t won in 11 efforts over fences, but was a winner off a mark some 11lbs higher than today over hurdles a couple of years ago. He’s a consistent sort who is always there or thereabouts and this looks very winnable for him, as it appears to be the weakest race he’s contested over fences!

He ran well for much of a 3m chase at Fakenham at the end of May on his debut for his new yard, despite having been off the track for 315 days and he was entitled to tire late on to finish 5th. He then turned out here over course and distance ten days ago to finish as a narrowly beaten runner-up off today’s mark, going down by just three quarters of a length whilst conceding 13lbs to the winner. A similar effort in a weaker contest could be just the ticket for Lord of the Dunes here at 11/4 BOG.

4 x 0.5pt BOG doubles as follows:

Xaarcet / Wak A Turtle @ 11.19/1 (9/4 & 11/4 : Bet365, Betfred & Totesport)
Xaarcet / Lord of the Dunes @ 11.19/1 (9/4 & 11/4 : Bet365, Betfred & Totesport)
St Maxime / Wak A Turtle @ 17.75/1 (4/1 & 11/4 : generally)
St Maxime / Lord of the Dunes @ 17.75/1 (4/1 & 11/4 : generally)
