Double Dutch, 2nd September 2015

Oh dear. We’re not really getting any rub of the green for DD at the moment. The heavy ground was clearly not a good path to take yesterday as 2/1 favourite Regal Palace finished last in his race, setting the tone for the pair. No sense dwelling on it, so on we go…

Tuesday’s results were as follows:

Regal Parade : LAST at 2/1 (adv 9/4)
Kinglami : 2nd at 11/4 (adv 11/4)
Galuppi : 3rd at 11/2 (adv 9/2)
Tilstarr : 5th at 11/4 (adv 5/2)

Results to date:

Back on terra firmer today, for a mixed double…

2.40 Southwell :

We start with a four runner novices’ chase, and a solid favourite in Lily Waugh. Trained by Anthony Honeyball, this lass is capable as she showed when second in a Listed mares’ chase two starts back. Ignoring her run in a Punchestown Festival handicap last time, she has an otherwise very consistent profile, and conditions suit.

Urcalin has to concede seven pounds to the other pair with a chance, by dint of a novices’ handicap chase win, and while that’s a big ask, he is a most progressive type. Winner of three of his last four races, and a very close second in the other – a decent hurdle at Aintree – he looks sure to give his running, something a number of DD picks have failed to do recently.

4.20 Bath :

Our Highlife Dancer selection at Bath last week was undone by an emergent horse with no prior form. Ayla’s Emperor was having only her fifth career start when bounding three-plus lengths clear of her field that day and, though dropping back in trip, she still gets weight from all of her rivals off a basement mark of just 45. Bizarrely, that means she’s actually carrying a pound LESS than when bolting up there, and she’s a rock solid favourite.

Against her is a motley crew, and picking one from many is not straightforward. However, Suni Dancer‘s return to ten furlongs could see her improve. A winner of one of her three attempts at the trip – on similar good to soft ground, and in a higher grade – she’s been in good placed form recently. She was hampered in her run last time, over what was probably an inadequate mile, and I think 6/1 is quite appealing.
