Race of the Day – 12 Oct

Race of the Day – 15:50 Nottingham

We go to Nottingham for the Race of the Day, and a one mile and two furlong handicap on good going.

Top Beak has been running consistently without getting his head in front, and steps back up in trip today. He is top of the Speed Ratings but hasn’t done well over this distance on his three previous tries, finishing last each time. Those races were much better than this one though (one of them a Group 2), so he shouldn’t be automatically discounted because of this.

There are sporadic sections of green for a few of the runners on the Instant Expert tab on the place setting, with no runner standing out particularly. Great Hall has two sections of green and one of amber, suggesting he is reasonably well suited to today’s race conditions.

The Pab tab reveals that almost 20% of runners that lead the race go on to win here, and 41% get a place. These are useful enough figures, however, from looking at the pace scores there appears to be over half of the field that like to be right up with the pace. This could mean that there is a ferocious pace, and it may set it for a horse with stamina that finishes strongly.

Trainer Statistics is the geegeez Gold report that is free to all users on Wednesdays and it provides really interesting insights into the habits of trainers.

Over the past year, Hughie Morrison has only sparingly had runners at Nottingham, but when he has they have invariably done really well. From 12 runners he has had five winners (41.67%) for a level stakes P/L of 14.50, which is excellent going. He runs Top Beak here today in the hope of improving those excellent stats.
