Race of the Day – 14:20 Exeter
The Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter features on today’s Race of the Day, and this is a two mile and one furlong handicap chase. There are currently eight runners and it is a great looking field, including the 2015 Queen Mother Champion Chase winner, Dodging Bullets.
The Phillip Hobbs trained Garde La Victoire is the current favourite, and he should strip plenty fit enough having won the Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las 17 days ago. His previous two starts to that were both over fences, in which he failed to complete, falling both times. Therefore, he has something to prove where his jumping is concerned today.
Garde La Victoire shows up easily the best on the Instant Expert tab. He has four sections of green and one of amber, showing he is really well suited by today’s conditions, and has everything in his favour to produce a decent performance.
Dodging Bullets has two sections of green and two of amber, having never run here at Exeter before. Due to his handicap rating he does have to carry at least 12 pounds more than any other runner here today, which will be no easy task on his seasonal reappearance.
The Pace tab shows that whilst it is still an advantage to be towards the head of affairs over this course and distance, it’s not as big an advantage as maybe expected for this distance. Both leaders and prominent runners early on have an amber pace blob, with around one in five going on to win the race.
Pain Au Chocolat looks likely to take them along, and I wonder if he will try and make it a decent gallop, to test the fitness of some of these.
The Trainer Snippets tool highlights that Paul Nicholls has a wonderful looking record with his jumps horses over the shorter distances. He is 145/496 for a level stakes profit of 73.36 (29.23%). These really are excellent figures and means anything he runs over these distances are worth keeping an eye on.
