Race of the Day – 15:30 Newcastle
A very open one mile handicap on the all-weather surface at Newcastle is Friday’s Race of the Day, and it looks a tricky contest.
Pickett’s Charge runs for Richard Guest for the first time today, and he has quite a useful record with horses he has inherited from other yards. He seems to be able to make a difference and bring something out in them, and for the past two years he’s had two winners and four places from 11 runners for a level stakes profit of 12.00 and 22.15 respectively. Pickett’s Charge is at the bottom of the handicap and quite large price, therefore if he does respond to his new trainer, he could be an interesting runner.
The Instant Expert tab shows up a few pockets of green, but not too much to get excited about.
Westward Ho probably shows up the best, with three sections of green. He is making his handicap debut after winning a maiden here last time out. That didn’t appear to be that great a race, but this lightly raced three year old potentially could be in off a nice mark and is definitely one to keep an eye on.
Pickett’s Charge has two sections of green which adds a bit of weight to his chances.
Looking at the Pace tab shows us that it is definitely preferable to be more of a hold up horse here over this distance. Runners that are held up and waited patiently with, have a win record of 14.73% for a level stakes profit of 63.11. This is certainly an interesting point to know, and it focuses our attention a little more on the runners with a low pace score here.
Testa Rossa has a clear liking for racing on the artificial surface at Newcastle, with two wins and five placed efforts from seven outings. These runs have produced a level stakes win profit of 10.00 and 18.28 for the places. This is clearly a great return and he is one to take note off.
