Race of the Day – 6 Jan

Race of the Day – 14:30 Kempton Park

This is a 0-60 handicap on the artificial surface at Kempton, run over a mile. In truth, this is a dreadful looking race, but there are still a few interesting looking runners in the field.

Three of the runners are making their handicap debut today, which can ben seen by the blue HC1 next to the horses names. If you click on these characters, it will take you to a report which shows how well the relevant trainer does with first time handicappers. This can be very useful for finding out if trainers usually target these kinds of races, and if the horse is running over a markedly different trip than previously, they are definitely worth a second look.

The Instant Expert tab highlights how poor a race this is, however one horse stands out a long way, and that’s Dragon Dream. She has four sections of green, and a section of grey having not raced over this distance before. She was staying on in both of her wins at this course over seven furlongs, so she appears likely to be able to get the full mile here today. She’s eight pounds higher than his last win, so there may need to be some improvement found, but as a three year old, that’s not impossible.

From looking at the Pace tab we can see that leaders and prominently ridden horses have the best record here over this distance, but it is fairly evenly matched all round, with no green blobs to show a strong bias.

There also doesn’t appear to necessarily be a confirmed front runner, meaning the pace may not be electric. This would play into the hands of Dragon Dream, as it could make it more akin to a seven furlong race and not test the stamina quite so much.

Horses For Courses is a free report for all users on a Friday, and today it highlights the useful previous course performance of Dragon Dream. She has raced here three times before, winning twice and being placed once, for level stakes profits of 32.00 and 40.70 respectively. She clearly likes racing here, and at a price of around 6/1, looks to be a little bit of value in a tough race.
