Race of the Day – 15 Feb

Race of the Day – 16:30 Wolverhampton

This is a really good looking 0-105 handicap over two miles on the all weather at Newcastle, with prize money to the winner of almost £12k.

Byron Flyer is the current favourite at 7/2 and his trainer Ian Williams has been is useful form of late. He has spent quite a bit of his career so far racing over hurdles, and has a useful enough mark there of 133. He is an interesting proposition back on the flat and if on song, will take a lot of beating.

Gang Warfare is at the top of the weights, but he looks good on the Instant Expert report. He’s got four sections of green and just the one of red, showing that he relishes today’s conditions, and he is also just the one pound higher than for his last win, therefore looks to be in with a shout today. He is priced around 9/1, which looks to potentially represent a nice bit of value.

Byron Flyer also has four sections of green, and having never run here at Wolverhampton before, one section of grey. He is rated seven pounds higher than when winning at Lingfield last time out, however, although that was in a lower class of race, he did it very easily and looks sure to go close again.

As can be expected for a race of this distance, there is quite an even spread of winners between the running styles. Although it should be noted that front runners do have the worst record, with prominent horses doing the best, as nearly 14% of them go on to win.

Isharah is chasing a four timer for Mark Johnston and looks the most likely to be leading them along based on the Pace tab. He has been raised a further five pounds for his latest win so it remains to be seen whether he can continue to defy such hikes in the weights.

The Trainer Statistics report is free to all users on a Wednesday. It shows us that Ian Williams is in tremendous form at present, with 11 winners (23.40%) and 19 places (40.43%) from his last 47 runners, for level stakes profits of 39.18 and 34.08 respectively. He runs Byron Flyer here today, who I think has an excellent chance.
