Race of the Day – 2 Mar

Race of the Day – 16:10 Taunton

This is quite a useful looking handicap hurdle at Taunton, where the going is good.

Volpone Jelois is trained by Paul Nicholls, who as well as being in good current form, has an excellent record at this course. This can be seen by the green characters below his name, and if you click on the black trainer icon below the horses name, you can see this in more detail. Over the past five years, Nicholls has had 52 winners (30.59%) and 107 places (62.94%) for level stakes profits of 3.80 and 8.50 respectively.

Qualando was a Cheltenham festival winner two years ago, when trained by Paul Nicholls, but hasn’t hit those heights since, and he is now with Alan Jones. The blue letters ‘TC’ next to the horses name indicate a trainer change, and if you click on those letters, it will take you to a report that shows how well the relevant trainers do with horses they have inherited.

The Instant Expert report to free to all users on a Thursday, and when looking at it for the race in question, The Unit stands out. He has four sections of green and just the one grey section, as he has never run in this class before. He is definitely well suited by the race conditions here today, and although he is nine pounds higher than for his last win, he was a very good second place behind the useful Air Horse One from this weight last time out.

Roadie Joe has three sections of green, and is actually two pounds lower than for his last win. He was going quite nicely when falling two from home last time out, so if he can reproduce that kind of form and a clear round, he could be in the mix.

Leaders here over this distance have a very good record, with 21.43% of them going on to win the race, for a level stakes profit of 56.74.

Roadie Joe and Volpone Jelois are both usually very prominent in their races, and I expect those two to be at the head of affairs from the start in this one. They could potentially take each other on, which could lead to them going too fast, and opening it up for the four in behind them to swoop when they have exhausted themselves.
