Race of the Day – 6 Apr

Race of the Day – 16:30 Taunton

This is a two mile and three furlongs handicap hurdle on good ground at Taunton, and it’s a useful looking race.

Black Corton is the current favourite, and he is trained by Paul Nicholls, who has an excellent record at the course. You can see this by the green C1 and C5 below his name (denoting good form over the past year, and five years), and if you click on the black trainer icon below the horses name, you will see the detail of this. Over the last five years he’s had 55 winners (30.39%) and 114 places (62.98%) from 181 runners, for level stakes profits of 3.10 and 8.34 respectively. Black Corton has been running very consistently, with three wins from his last five races.

Space Oddity stands right out with four sections of green and one of grey. The grey section is for field size, meaning he hasn’t raced here with this few runners, but is not something that would really bother me. He is just the five pounds higher than for his last victory, and he can be forgiven for being pulled up last time out, as the ground was riding heavy.

Black Corton has three sections of green, so also looks reasonably well suited by today’s conditions. He hasn’t run here before, or in this class of race.

Leaders here over this distance have a very good record, with 20.77% of them winning, for a level stakes profit of 48.24. Prominent runners are next best, therefore it is clear that it is beneficial to be near the front early on.

It looks like there is a lot of pace in the race, even with a small field, as Phobiaphiliac. Black Corton and Space Oddity are all confirmed front runners. This means they could go off at a blistering pace, which would leave it wide open for a horse that has the ability to stay on at the end.
