Race of the Day – 26 May

Race of the Day – 19:40 Musselburgh

This is a good quality handicap being run over seven furlongs at Musselburgh, with the ground riding good to firm.

The Mark Johnston trainer Thomas Cranmer is the current favoruite, at around 13/8. He was a good winner last time out over course and distance, and although he has another six pounds to contend with because of that, this three year old looks very much on the upgrade and should be tough to beat. Johnston has a very good long term record here at Musselburgh, as over the past five years he’s had 54 winners (20.45%) from 264 runners, for a level stakes profit of 4.16.

Johnston is double handed in this small field of six runners, as he also run the bottom weight (the other three year old in the field), Storm Cry.

When looking at the Instant Expert report we can see that Thomas Cranmer stands out really well, with four sections of green. Seven furlongs looks like his optimum distance at the moment, and he handles the firmer ground very well.

Ralphy Boy is the old timer of the field, and he has three sections of amber, showing that he is reasonably well suited by today’s racing conditions, if he can find some form.

The Pace tab shows that early leaders here over this distance have a really good record, with 28.98% of them going on to win the race, for a level stakes profit of 134.38.

The two Johnston horses have easily the highest pace score and usually like to be at the head of affairs early on. They are drawn close to each other as well in stalls three and one, so it looks very likely that they will be leading the way.

Horses For Courses is available to all users on a Friday, and it shows that over the years Ralphy Boy has really liked running here at Musselburgh. He’s had four winners and eight places from 16 races, for level stakes profits of 16.00 and 19.98 respectively. He is the big outsider in the field today, and has to take on some good looking younger horses. However, if the return to a favourite track sees him back to somewhere near his best, he could get a lot closer than his odds suggest.
