Race of the Day – 14 Jun

Race of the Day – 15:00 Haydock

This is a very useful looking three year old handicap over a mile at Haydock, where there is currently quite a bit of give underfoot, and a good to soft going.

There are several recent winners in the field, including Sidewinder, who is chasing a hat trick. Trained by Tom Dascombe and ridden by Richard Kingscote, both of his recent wins were over course and distance, but on good to firm going. He has also be raised seven pounds for those two wins, so will need to have improved again to take this. Sidewinder also has the highest Speed Rating in this field.

Hugin has only had the two runs to date, but was a winner last time on the all weather at Newcastle, and gave the impression that the extra furlong would really suit. His trainer David Simcock, has a very good record with last time out winners. He’s had 37 winners (26.06%) and 72 places (50.70%) from 142 runners, for level stakes profits of 28.92 and 27.69 respectively.

There are quite a few grey sections on the Instant Expert report as this is a race for three year olds, however Sidewinder comes out reasonably well with two sections of green and one of amber, when the report is on the ‘Place’ setting. A mile looks his optimum distance and if he can cope with the ground, he could be a big player in this.

Original Choice has two sections of green and two of amber, and encouragingly, he has looked fine racing in today’s softer conditions.

The Pace report shows that leaders here over this distance have a good record, with 16.67% of them winning the race, for a level stakes profit of 30.21.

Original Choice has been very handy in his last few races and has the highest pace score in this one. He has a good draw in stall eight, and looks the most likely to be the early leader with Martin Harley dictating the pace.

A lot of this field like to be quite close to the pace of the race, therefore there is a chance this one be run very quickly through the first few furlongs, and given the good to soft going, it may require and good bit of stamina to win this.

The Trainer Statistics report is available to all users on a Wednesday, and it shows what a good record Tom Dascombe has here at Haydock. Over the past year he’s had 14 winners (20.00%) and 26 places (37.14%) from 70 runners, for level stakes profits of 24.63 and 18.52 respectively. As mentioned above, he runs Sidewinder here today, who looks a little overpriced if he acts on the going.
