Race of the Day – 4 Jul

Race of the Day – 15:00 Hamilton

This is a nine furlong maiden stakes and there is an interesting mix of lightly raced three year olds and those with more experience.

Waiting A Lot has only had the one run so far, where she was very green and struggled to get into the race over seven furlongs. The extra distance looks sure to suit, especially if she settles better now she has some experience, and it is worth noting that she tops the Speed Ratings after her solitary run. Her trainer David O’Meara has a good long term record here at Hamilton, and also has useful stats with runners making their second start.

Torcello is the odds on favourite and he was second in a soft ground maiden last month. He was staying on nicely that day when he figured out what he was doing, and an improvement on that performance would make him tough to beat here today.

The Shortlist is available to all registered users on a Tuesday, and Somnambulist makes it with a decent score of 12. This Rip Van Winkle gelding has four sections of green and just the one of grey, having never run on this going before. He has looked comfortable on soft and good to firm, so today’s underfoot conditions should not be a problem. He is more experienced than a few of these and ran well for a long way over course and distance last time out, when the soft going probably wasn’t ideal.

The Instant Expert report confirms the good showing of Somnambulist, and as this is a maiden there are not a lot of other green sections. In fact, the favourite Torcello is the only runner in the race and he has two sections of green, for the Class and the Distance.

Early leaders here over this distance have an extremely good record, with 22.97% of them going on to win the race, for a level stakes profit of 40.27.

Starplex, Somnambulist and Testbourne have the highest pace scores, however it is difficult to read too much into this given the fact that a lot of today’s field have only had one or two races.
