Brando makes it to The Shortlist for a Group 3 six-furlong dash at Newmarket today, and this Pivotal gelding looks nicely suited by today’s race. He has a useful score of 11, having three sections of green and two of amber, and is currently the 3/1 favourite.
The most recent form of Brando looks quite poor on the face of it, however, he was racing in Group 1 company on soft or heavy going and was unable to find any kind of needed acceleration to get involved.
His last run on good ground was at Deauville, where he won a Group 1, beating the very good Aclaim by half a length. Prior to that, he was an excellent third place over course and distance in the July Cup (also a Group 1) beaten only by Harry Angel and Limato.
Trainer Kevin Ryan has been in good form recently and has been among the winners. Over the past 30 days, he’s had seven winners (20.59%) and 16 places (47.06%) from 34 runners, for level stakes profits of 4.63 and 5.90 respectively and an Impact Value of 1.83.
He also has a decent looking long-term record here at Newmarket over the past five years. During that time he’s had 131 runners, which have produced 19 winners (14.50%) and 44 places (33.59%), for level stakes profits of 29.58 and 63.06 respectively and an Impact Value of 1.38.
Tom Eaves has been riding well and has been in the winner’s enclosure a few times. Over the past 30 days, he’s had four winners (16.67%) and nine places (37.50%) from 24 runners, for level stakes profits of 16.75 and 17.24 respectively and an Impact Value of 1.49.
The Instant Expert report shows how well suited Brando is to this race but also highlights some potential dangers. Magical Memory has three sections of green and two of amber and appears to have a chance of going well at a nice price.
The Pace report shows that early leaders here over this distance have the best record, with 15.79% of them going on to win the race, for a level stakes profit of 37.08 and an Impact Value of 1.66.
Brando is usually held up and waited with and with the ground drying out I would imagine that Eaves will be happy to do something similar again today.
